When I was hospital director, Gene Stern and I gradually evolved the liver transplant program. Ron Busuttil, MD, was obviously key to the program and invested huge amounts of time making sure that the program would succeed from day one. Due to Ron's diligence and the fact that Gene, who was then the chair of surgery, was so meticulous in making sure that we were all prepared for what was coming, the program started off extremely well and has continued in that manner ever since. The heart transplant program came later. These were all major accomplishments at the time, not just because we did it, but because the people involved did it extremely well and they have been a very large part of the Medical Center’s contributions.

One of the things I loved to do was attend the annual transplant patients’ picnic. Transplant patients would return to the Medical Center and enjoy their successes; it was a most heartwarming experience to have seen some of these patients when they were very ill and then to see them as really healthy individuals enjoying life. To me, that’s what the Medical Center is all about.
