I worked at UCLA for thirty years,
beginning in 1958. Some of the wonderful things that
I saw included what patients did for each other.
The first time John Wayne was a patient, he would just
walk down the hall and go visit people in their rooms. The
thrill that the patients would get! Another time, Muhammad Ali
had a room on the 10th floor that also housed
patients with leukemia. Mr. Ali’s hobby was magic, so he would
visit these very ill patients and perform magic tricks.
From the doctors and nursing staff, to the
volunteers and the clerical staff, it was like one big family
helping others. At that time, Father Patrick Traynor from the
Chaplain’s office would find lodging for patient families who
couldn’t afford hotels. He started St. James Inn, a
three-bedroom house with a big back yard on Westwood Boulevard,
which still stands today to house families of patients with
catastrophic diseases.
